Dr. OliverHayakawa

Coaching for clearer thinking, better conversations and more intentional action.

My work spans higher education, men’s work and one-to-one coaching — through coaching education, facilitation, group programmes and retreats.

Dr. Oliver Hayakawa

The underlying approach

01

Experience fully.

02

Express intentionally.

03

Act effectively.

Much of my work begins with creating the conditions for clearer thinking: slowing things down enough to notice what is actually happening, seeing beyond our habitual interpretations and responding deliberately rather than automatically.

Clarity matters because it changes what becomes possible. When we can see more clearly — what we are assuming, avoiding, protecting or trying to create — we have more choice in how we respond.

Across coaching, education and men’s work, I am interested in what becomes possible when people can experience more fully, express themselves more intentionally and act more effectively.

What people say about the work

“Rather than lecturing on theory, Oliver facilitates discovery, using powerful, practical tools and live practice to guide us to our own insights. This programme has been one of the most meaningful developmental experiences of my career.”

“I feel happier and calmer, and more able to create things. My wife says I'm more present, and I've had more fun with my kids. I've learned how to listen better, to keep my word better, and to show up better.”
JackCreative Director, The Writing Club · The Man in the Mirror participant
“Oliver creates space where the truth can land. Somewhere in our work together we replaced a part — my internal architecture runs differently now. The results speak for themselves: my ceilings genuinely became my new floors.”
BenFounder, Kiln
“I now integrate coaching techniques like the GROW model, active listening, being present and solution-focused questioning into my lectures, fostering dynamic student collaboration and confidence. This programme doesn't just teach coaching — it cultivates a mindset that empowers educators.”

“Being part of a group with Oliver was a fantastic experience. Being in the group showed just how capable and connected I can be — if I get out of my own way.”
NickWriter · The Man in the Mirror participant
“You helped me see where I was hiding behind potential, confusing intensity with progress, and negotiating with myself instead of committing. You challenge without ego, push without forcing, and don't let people hide behind stories. That made all the difference.”
EdoeFounder, Buildwright Construction
“I was expecting the usual lecture-like sessions where you take notes and forget what you learnt later. To my surprise they were very interactive. The atmosphere Oliver created made me more open — he met us all where we were. These sessions met and surpassed my expectations.”

“Oliver created a space unlike anything else — nurturing, challenging, and radically honest, made all the richer by the deeply interesting group of men in it.”

“Every bit of reading or homework felt tailored to me and my experiences. Oliver's strength is that he is a great listener — and he doesn't just talk the talk, he walks the walk. I value that more than anything.”
RupertFounder, SuckerPunch Productions
“I no longer see leadership as a set of techniques, but as a way of being — one that begins with mindset, values, and self-understanding. The transformation was subtle yet profound: it did not happen through instruction alone, but through dialogue, reflection, and skilled facilitation.”

“One of the biggest changes for me has been the notion of going 'all-in'. It has had a profound impact on my personal and professional life — including how I show up as a husband, father and son.”

“I am now more attentive and have learned to 'wait' when talking to others, especially my students. My students are encouraged to explore more ideas before any interruption from me — and I am more capable of building deeper connections with the people around me.”

“Oliver's intuition is beyond anything I have experienced before. His ability to tap into something I didn't know was even there means each time I walk away a better version of myself.”

“This programme didn't just teach coaching tools — it changed how I relate to myself, to students, and to leadership. Leadership not as a performance, but as a practice of presence and responsibility.”

“Being in a group of men like the one Oliver brought together was a truly unique and incredibly special experience. I think it's rare for men to find such a judgement-free and fully supportive space to share their boldest plans for success, as well as what scares them about those same plans.”

About Oliver

The same questions, across very different rooms

My work has taken place across higher education, government, international relations and coaching, but the questions underneath it have remained surprisingly consistent: how we make sense of complexity, how we communicate, how we develop, and how we choose to act.

Today I work as a coach, coach educator and facilitator, alongside my role as a Lecturer in International Relations. I draw on nearly two decades of experience across UK–China government and institutional relations, international trade and investment, higher education, leadership development and professional coaching.
